Lois McCallister now lives with her daughter after she was abused in a nursing home, but she still begs her family not to hurt her every night. Mary and Paul French, Lois’s daughter and son-in-law, have hired a nursing home abuse attorney to file a lawsuit against the home, its corporate parents, and three employees after uncovering the alleged abuse. The corporations involved are Sunrise Senior Living Inc. and Sunrise Continuing Care LLC.
According to the Delco Times, a granny cam was hidden in Lois’s room and captured three nursing home employees taunting and assaulting her. She was half naked in the video and the footage shows her attempting to escape only to be pulled back into her room. Officials at the home dismissed the family’s concerns, blaming Lois’s dementia for her reactions. They were so unconcerned that they did not even report the allegations of abuse to the Department of Public Welfare.
After getting no satisfaction from the facility, the family took the video to law enforcement. Apparently, law enforcement saw things differently than the facility. The employees from the video have been charged with harassment, neglect, simple assault, conspiracy, and recklessly endangering another person. According to the family’s nursing home abuse lawyer, the company itself, “fostered a culture of abuse and intimidation” that allowed the abuse to occur. The Department of Public Welfare must have agreed because when they found out, they ultimately revoked the facility’s operating license for incompetence, negligence, and misconduct.
Both the state regulators and the family’s nursing home abuse attorneys seek to hold corporate leadership responsible for their actions in addition to the employees. The French family wants to ensure this does not happen to other residents and said they received a letter from a resident saying care at the facility is the best it has been in two years.
