Scott Distasio explains what you should do in the event you are taking the wrong medication.
Some Information About Taking the Wrong Medication In Florida
Sometimes, the side effects from stopping the wrong medication or the wrong dose of medication too quickly can actually be worse than continuing the medication. For example, the body becomes addicted to some medicines and goes through withdrawal if they are stopped. Sometimes withdrawal can be painful or even life threatening. These medicines need to be slowly reduced over time. So the worst thing you can do is simply stop and tell know one.
With other medicines, there is no withdrawal and taking even one more does can cause permanent injury or death. With these medicines, the best thing to do is to stop taking them immediately.
You should not make this decision on your own. Instead, you should immediately call the doctor that proscribed it and let them know what has happened. Tell the doctor’s office the wrong medicine you were taking, the dose, and the length of time you were taking it. Your doctor will know what to do. If you cannot get hold of your doctor because it is after hours or on a weekend call a pharmacist or go to a hospital emergency.
