The Holiday Season is Upon Us

With the Holiday Season comes Holiday Office Parties, Social Gatherings and other events to celebrate the Holiday and the New Year.  At most of these functions alcohol is served.  Alcohol and automobiles are a deadly combination because drunk driving is a major cause of car accidents, fatalities, and injuries.  According to an article posted by the Miami New Times, 32% of all traffic-related deaths in 2008 were caused by drunk drivers.  These deaths could have been avoided.

 There is some good news.  According to a new report from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the number of Floridians getting behind the wheel intoxicated has declined from 13.7% between 2002 and 2005 to 10.9% between 2006 and 2009.   

Although, there is not much you can do to prevent an automobile accident when a drunk driver is at the wheel of the other vehicle, you can make the conscious decision not to get behind the wheel of an automobile if you have been drinking.  Local cab companies have programs to pick you up and take you home free of charge if you drank too much while you were out celebrating.  You can also pick a designated driver before leaving for your party destination.
